Saltfoss heads to the NRC with a floating molten salt plant
The Danish developer formerly known as Seaborg wants to license barge-mounted reactors in the US.
Saltfoss has told the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission it intends to begin pre-application engagement for its seaMSR-100, a molten salt reactor mounted on a barge. It plans to submit a regulatory engagement plan in the first quarter of 2027.
Each module produces 100 MWe, and a single barge can carry up to 600 MWe. The reactor runs near atmospheric pressure on low-enriched uranium. If it overheats, the fuel salt drains by gravity, with no operator action or external power needed. Samsung Heavy Industries will build the barges.
Saltfoss expects to be the first developer licensed under the NRC’s new Part 53 rules.
