Last Energy, Radiant and Antares clear DOE safety steps

Three companies in the Reactor Pilot Program passed Department of Energy authorization milestones in October.

The Department of Energy approved the documented safety analysis for Last Energy’s pilot reactor at Texas A&M’s RELLIS campus on 7 October. The pilot shares the geometry of the 20 MWe PWR-20 and is meant to show low-power criticality first.

Radiant’s safety analysis for its Kaleidos demonstration unit was approved on 29 October. The 1 MWe helium-cooled microreactor will run at full power for 60 days at Idaho National Laboratory.

Antares’ nuclear safety design agreement for Mark-1, its first electricity-producing reactor, was approved on 23 October. The company plans six months of full-power operation in 2027.
