Bruce Power takes unit 5 offline for a 30-year life extension

Unit 5 is the fourth of six Bruce reactors to go through a major component replacement.

Bruce Power shut down unit 5 at its Ontario site on 1 November to begin a Major Component Replacement outage. Crews will replace the unit’s steam generators, pressure tubes, calandria tubes and feeder tubes, which adds 30 to 35 years of operation.

Unit 5 is the fourth of six units in the programme. Unit 6 returned to the grid in 2023. Unit 3 came back in 2026, more than seven months ahead of schedule. Unit 4 is running ahead of unit 3’s pace.

Unit 7 is next, in 2028, followed by unit 8 in 2030. Bruce Power says the programme supports 22,000 jobs a year.
