Poland applies to start early works at its first nuclear site

PEJ wants to begin preparatory construction at Lubiatowo-Kopalino ahead of a full construction permit.

Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe has asked the Pomeranian provincial governor for a permit to start early works for Poland’s first nuclear plant, three Westinghouse AP1000 units at Lubiatowo-Kopalino.

The work covers about 300 hectares. It includes intake and discharge pipelines for cooling water, laid under the beach and seabed, as well as internal roads. A July amendment to the law means these works do not need a separate licence from the nuclear regulator. Bechtel has been managing the site since August.

PEJ plans to apply for a construction permit in 2027 and start construction in 2028. The first unit is due in 2036.
