Centrus ships first new Oak Ridge centrifuge to Piketon
It is the first of more than 11,500 machines planned for the Ohio enrichment plant’s expansion.
Centrus Energy has shipped the first centrifuge built at its Oak Ridge, Tennessee, manufacturing centre to its enrichment plant in Piketon, Ohio. “We have 11,519 to go,” said Patrick Brown, who heads American Centrifuge Operating.
The new cascades use only US-made parts and are expected to come online in 2029. They will produce LEU for today’s reactors, HALEU for advanced designs and enrichment for national security uses. The DOE has awarded Centrus $900 million for HALEU production at Piketon.
