How does a data centre actually buy nuclear power?
A nuclear power agreement connects the producer and the buyer commercially, while electricity typically reaches the data centre through the grid.

1. The nuclear plant generates electricity
A nuclear power plant generates electricity and feeds it into the grid, where it joins electricity produced by other sources. The grid transports electricity across the network, balancing generation and demand.
2. The company signs a power purchase agreement
A data centre operator or technology company can enter into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with a nuclear electricity producer.
The agreement typically specifies the amount of electricity or generating capacity covered, the price and the duration. Depending on its structure, it may involve physical electricity purchases or financial settlements.
3. The data centre receives electricity through the grid
The data centre typically receives electricity through its existing grid connection, supplied by a utility or another electricity provider.
This means that signing a nuclear PPA doesn’t necessarily establish a dedicated physical connection between the nuclear plant and the data centre.
